During our backpacking in Bicol, Catanduanes is the hardest province to penetrate because it's an island province. Dubbed as "The Happy Island," Catanduanes hides a few spectacular and breathtaking tourist spots and destinations which can make you "happy" and stunned. Lately, the province is getting more attention in social media sites because of stunning photos of Binurong Point, Puraran Beach, and the other attractions.

Backpacking: Sorsogon | Why Subic Beach called “The Pink Beach”

When I searched the tourist spots, attractions and destinations in the province of Sorsogon online, Google kept giving me articles about “the pink beach” and based on my stock knowledge, the “pink beach” can only be found in Zamboanga City. After browsing on the the articles, I finally knew that there’s another pink beach located in Matnog, Sorsogon. Aside from that, Google also suggested Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary. These spots are the perfect destination to end my 2019 summer bucket list.

Backpacking: Our Journey in Albay

The provinces of Albay, Sorsogon and Catanduanes are part of my solo-backpacking list, however, the reality started when I planned my Bicol itinerary two months ago - to complete Region 5. Legaspi City in Albay is the center of the Bicol region that showcases a lot of tourist spots and destinations; from historical sites, beaches, gorgeous landscapes, and to the remarkable activities and sumptuous delicacies.

To complete my Region 5 league, I made a backpacking itinerary for Albay, Sorsogon and the Catanduanes Island. Initially, it was a solo-backpacking, but Tin, my friend joined me. Traveling via land from Manila to this region can take 12 hours, a bit challenging, right? As I always say, time is just a number, in exchange, you'll be rewarded with the stunning tourist spots and destinations of Albay, Sorsogon and the province of Catanduanes. Cebu City is the capital city of the Province of Cebu, situated on the eastern shore of Cebu Island. Cebu is one of the largest islands in the Philippine Archipelago.  It is considered as the “Queen City of the South” because of its economic stability and other economic factors. Of course, in Philippine history, Cebu has a gigantic contribute, especially in Christianity.

After Negros Museum, my next destination was The RUINS. I was at the entrance when I saw the gigantic shadow like structure of The RUINS, a few meters away. With my backpack, of course on my back, that’s why it’s called backpack because it’s really on my back, right? Anyways, going back to The RUINS, upon paying the entrance fee, I directly went to the fountain area, sat on the bench and was staring at The Ruins for 20 minutes. The ambiance was relaxing because the area is surrounded by greens designed with the gorgeous landscape. Miag-Ao Church | UNESCO World Heritage Site

Miag-ao Church or the Church of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva is an old baroque church in Miag-ao, Ilo-Ilo. It is one of the world famous baroque churches in the Philippines and it became one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The construction of this church began in 1787 while Fray Francisco M. Gonzales. O.S.A. was the parish priest of Miag-ao and Domingo Libo-on  was the Gobernadorcillo. The Church was completed in 1797 and it served as the fortress against the Muslim Raiders. In 1898, during the revolution, this church was destroyed but then it was rebuilt.

After my successful Cebu Solo-Backpacking, another solo-backpacking in the Visayas was planned - this is it, a solo-backpacking in Western Visayas. Language barrier wasn't a problem because Hiligaynon has similarity to our native language in Romblon. During my travel, I found out that the Negrenses are really accommodating and has a good sense of direction. In a simple question like: "where is it located?" they provided me a detailed instruction. In general, Negros Occidental and the province of Ilo-Ilo are Must Visit provinces in the Philippines. Sorted according to my itinerary, historical, heritage and tourist spots below were my destinations.

 After Miag-ao and Guimbal, it was around 6 PM when we passed by Tigbauan Church in Tigbauan, Ilo-Ilo. I already paid my fare until Ilo-Ilo City but I was amazed by the facace of the church, so I immediately got off the jeepney and had a very short visit in Tigbauan Church. In front is an open plaza and is just a few meters away from Tigbauan Municipal Hall.

 Guimbal Church is situated by the highway of Guimbal, Ilo-Ilo, can be recognized easily because of its facade. After my visit at Miag-Ao Church, I traveled around 30 minutes to Guimbal. According to my research, Guimbal Church or St. Nicholas of Tolentino Church  doesn’t have any record to when I was erected or established, however, completed between 1769 and 1774 under Friar Juan Campos. In 1893, it was further enlarged but later destroyed by fire during the Revolution in 1896 to 1898.

Isla Reta is a resort in Talicud Island - a smaller island situated at the back side of Island Garden of Samal (ICAGOS) or literally ‘sa likod.’ This is one of the island paradise in Davao del Norte that bears white sand beaches, and island that is surrounded with emerald and crystal clear water. And, underwater is a sanctuary of colorful flora and fauna.
