About Davao de Oro
Davao de Oro (formerly Compostela Valley) is one of Mindanao’s most underrated gems — a province blessed with natural wonders, lush mountains, powerful waterfalls, and friendly locals. Known as the “Golden Province,” Davao de Oro shines not only because of its rich gold deposits but also for its stunning landscapes, eco-adventures, and peaceful countryside charm. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, hiking to mountain peaks, or soaking in hot springs, this province offers an unforgettable travel experience.
Top Tourist Spots in Davao de Oro
1. Marangig Falls (Maragusan)
Maragusan, often called the “Summer Capital of Davao Region,” is home to over 30 waterfalls — and Marangig Falls is the most famous. Surrounded by lush forests, this multi-tiered waterfall offers a refreshing escape and cool swimming spots for visitors.
2. Tagbibinta Falls
Another must-see in Maragusan is Tagbibinta Falls, a seven-tier cascade with crystal-clear water and a natural pool. Its accessibility and scenic beauty make it one of the most photographed spots in Davao de Oro.
3. Mainit Hot Springs
For a relaxing dip, visit the Mainit Hot Springs in Maco. The natural sulfuric pools are believed to have healing properties and are surrounded by lush vegetation, offering a soothing retreat after a day of exploring.
4. Mt. Candalaga
Standing proudly over Maragusan, Mount Candalaga is one of the province’s most beautiful peaks. The climb rewards trekkers with panoramic views, wildflowers, and a sea of clouds. It’s a favorite among mountaineers looking for a Mindanao challenge.
5. Awao Falls
Located near Monkayo, Awao Falls is a hidden wonder with multiple tiers of cascading water surrounded by tropical forest. The trail to Awao Falls offers a peaceful nature trek experience.

Alternatively, travelers from other parts of Mindanao can access the province via Compostela Valley Road from Agusan del Sur.
My Actual Visit to Awao Falls
This is Day 6 – 7 Days Solo-Backpacking in Mindanao
Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Lanao del Sur (BARMM)
In my solo backpacking, Day 6 started in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. It's a cutting trip from Davao City due to limited time. I stayed overnight in WBC Lodge for 300 Pesos. Had breakfast at McDonald's, which is two blocks away. Then, rode in a tricycle to the city terminal, where I rode on a Bachelor Bus to Monkayo Terminal. The terminal is by the Public Market, so it's a busy area. There are habal-habal drivers, but I chose Kuya Rodger to bring me to Awao Falls.
