About San Agustin Church

San Agustin Church (officially the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Nuestra Señora de Consolacion y Correa) is the oldest stone church in the Philippines, located along General Luna Street in the heart of Intramuros, Manila. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 under the "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" collective inscription, this Spanish colonial monument stands as an architectural triumph.

Constructed out of heavy adobe stone blocks, San Agustin Church is celebrated for its earthquake-baroque structural durability, ornate interior vaulting, 3D trompe-l'œil ceiling murals, and centuries-old Augustinian monastery museum. It remains an active parish church and one of the nation's premier historical destinations.

History and Heritage

Originally established by the Order of Saint Augustine in 1571, the first two iterations of the church were built using bamboo, nipa, and timber—both of which were destroyed by fires. Realizing the need for a permanent sanctuary, the Augustinian friars commissioned the construction of a stone church in 1586, designed by Spanish architect Juan Macías.

Completed in 1607, the stone structure survived catastrophic earthquakes that flattened most of Manila over the centuries, earning it a reputation as an indestructible fortress of faith. Beyond earthquakes, it weathered the British invasion in 1762, the Spanish-American War in 1898, and the devastating Battle of Manila in 1945—standing as the only one of seven historic Intramuros churches left intact after World War II.

What to See

San Agustin Church and its adjoining Augustinian Monastery house priceless religious art, imperial relics, and architectural treasures. Here are five essential things to see:

1. Trompe-l'œil Fresco Ceilings

Painted in 1875 by Italian artists Cesare Alberoni and Giovanni Dibella, the interior ceiling features breathtaking 3D optical illusions that mimic intricate stone carvings, rosettes, and classical vaults using paint alone.

2. The Choir Loft and 18th-Century Pipe Organ

Positioned above the main entrance, the hand-carved molave choir stalls (carved in 1608) and the historic 18th-century bamboo-and-metal pipe organ represent priceless ecclesiastical artistry.

3. The Tomb of Miguel López de Legazpi

Located inside a side chapel to the left of the main altar lies the final resting place of Miguel López de Legazpi, the Spanish conquistador who established Manila as the capital in 1571.

4. San Agustin Monastery Museum Cloisters

The vast two-story monastery cloister converted into a museum showcases centuries-old oil paintings, ivory statues, antique liturgical vestments, and religious artifacts.

5. Paris-Made Crystal Chandeliers

Suspended along the central nave are grand 19th-century Paris-forged crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, golden glow across the carved wooden pews and stone aisles.
