Mt. Pico de Loro, Cavite

Mt. Pico de Loro

About Mt. Pico de Loro

Mt. Pico de Loro, also known as the Parrot’s Beak, is one of the most iconic and scenic hiking destinations in Southern Luzon. Straddling the boundary between Maragondon, Cavite and Nasugbu, Batangas, this mountain stands at around 664 meters above sea level. It is famous for its unique rock formation that resembles a parrot’s beak — a thrilling landmark that has become a rite of passage for many hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Pico de Loro is part of the Palay-Palay–Mataas na Gulod National Park, a protected forest reserve that shelters diverse wildlife and lush vegetation. After being closed for several years for rehabilitation, the trail has been reopened with improved systems to ensure sustainable trekking and the preservation of the mountain’s natural beauty.

How to Get There

From Manila:

  • Take a bus bound for Naic or Maragondon, Cavite (available from Southwest Integrated Terminal or PITX).
  • From Maragondon town proper, ride a tricycle to the Pico de Loro DENR registration area in Barangay Papaya.
  • Register, attend a short orientation, and secure a guide (mandatory for safety and environmental monitoring).

Travel time from Manila to the jump-off point is around 3 to 4 hours. Private vehicles can also access the trailhead via Ternate, passing through the scenic Kaybiang Tunnel road.

Trail Information

  • Location: Maragondon, Cavite / Nasugbu, Batangas
  • Elevation: 668 MASL
  • Difficulty: 3/9 (Beginner to Moderate)
  • Hours to Summit: 2–3 hours
  • Trail Type: Out-and-back / Traverse (optional to Nasugbu)

The Pico de Loro trail is beginner-friendly but still offers an exciting mix of forest trekking and rock scrambling. The ascent involves gradual inclines through shaded woodland, eventually opening up to grassland slopes that lead to the summit area and the famous monolith.

What to Expect

The Trails

The trek begins in a forested trail filled with birdsong and cool mountain air. From DENR, it’s a moderate ascent, and the terrains are covered with hardwood and fruit-bearing trees, while shrubs and grasses are on each side. I can say the trail is well-established, but there are fork trails that might confuse anyone, especially if hikers prefer a night trek. Trail marks on the trees and branches are visible, and they are accurate. Before enjoying the beauty on Mt. Pico de Loro's summit, there’s a waterfall that can replenish your tired muscles, your choice either before you continue the ascent or descent. The trail to the waterfalls is out of the way towards the summit, but trail marks can be seen guiding hikers to its exact location.

Parrot’s Beak

Hikers need to prepare for the 75-80 degree ascent. Along the way, you’ll encounter several rest stops and viewpoints overlooking the lush greenery of Cavite and Batangas. As you reach the summit, the iconic Parrot’s Beak monolith comes into view — a stunning limestone tower that challenges climbers with a short but steep rock ascent.

The Summit

From the summit, enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of Manila Bay, Nasugbu coastlines, and the Sierra Madre mountain range on a clear day. While climbing the monolith itself was once a highlight, it is now restricted for safety reasons — but the view from the base remains equally spectacular.

Where to Stay

The Campsite

Its campsite is an open and wide space that can handle more than 20 tents at the same time. This space is situated by the cliff and bamboo on the other side; it has a perfect view of the summit and the monolith. The ambience is cool because of the sea breeze, and the air is fresher. The surroundings are also refreshing because it is covered with grass and trees. On the summit, this mountain has a 360-degree view of the nearby provinces. There's also a big picture of the stunning crystal blue waters.

Mt. Pico de Loro campsite

Most hikers complete the Pico de Loro hike as a day trip from Manila, but there are camping grounds near the summit and at the DENR base for overnight stays. For more comfort, nearby accommodations are available:

  • Kaybiang Tunnel Inn – Affordable rooms near the jump-off area.
  • Pico Sands Hotel – Located in Nasugbu, perfect for a post-hike beach escape.
  • Mt. Pico de Loro Eco Campsite – Offers a rustic camping experience with mountain views.
