Solo Backpacking in Sultan Kudarat

Solo Backpacking in Sultan Kudarat and Travel Guide

About Sultan Kudarat

Solo backpacking in Sultan Kudarat is a journey that goes beyond the usual tourist trail — it’s an immersion into Mindanao’s vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the peaceful surroundings of Baras Bird Sanctuary in Tacurong to the cool waters of Esperanza Hot and Cold Springs, this province offers both adventure and reflection. Traveling alone here lets you move at your own pace — whether you’re exploring caves, chasing waterfalls, or meeting locals who proudly share their heritage, Sultan Kudarat welcomes every traveler with open arms and fascinating stories.

The Capitol Building

The Provincial Capitol of Sultan Kudarat is situated in Isulan, and according to reviews, it is one of the most beautiful capitols in the Philippines - it's definitely a big YES for me. The Capitol compound is 9.2 hectares covered with well-maintained landscape, while the artistic structures are based on Islamic architecture, painted with white and gold. On the other hand, in the middle of the capital ground, there's a gigantic golden statue of Sultan Kudarat, after whom the province was named.

How I got to Sultan Kudarat

My day started in Lake Sebu, where I stayed overnight. So after discovering the beauty of South Cotabato, I was brought to the Lake Sebu Terminal. Then, rode a van to Surallah for 40 pesos. Another van ride to Isulan, for 50 Pesos, alighted at their terminal. You can charter a habal-habal or tricycle to different parts of Isulan.

I stayed at the provincial capitol for 30 minutes, then headed back to the terminal, where I rode a Husky Bus bound for Cotabato. The fare was 70 pesos. Alighted at the junction and visited the Pink Mosque. Then, by the highway, rode a van to Cotabato City, alighted sa kanto pa Grand Mosque. Chartered a tricycle to the Grand Mosque, paid 200 pesos, back and forth. Then, rode a habal to CityMall, 60 pesos. Break at Jollibee, 105 pesos. Besides Jollibee, I rode on a padyak to Carta de Amor, where I checked in for 500 pesos, overnight. The room has AC and a TV. Basta, pag nasa Jollibee (front of Greenwich), may trike jan, sakyan nyo. Tapos sundan nyo sa Mapa. Tidied up. Rested. End of Day 3.

Summary

Backpacking solo through Sultan Kudarat reveals the true essence of Mindanao — serene, soulful, and full of life. Each stop, from its historical landmarks to its untouched natural sites, tells a story of resilience and unity. The province’s quiet charm and cultural richness make it a rewarding destination for those seeking meaning in their travels. As you leave Sultan Kudarat, you’ll carry not just memories of scenic landscapes but also the warmth of its people — a reminder that solo journeys can be both liberating and deeply human.
