About San Juanico Bridge

San Juanico Bridge is the longest bridge in the Philippines that connects two islands — Leyte and Samar — via the San Juanico Strait. Spanning over 2.16 kilometers, it has become one of the most iconic landmarks in Eastern Visayas and a symbol of unity between the provinces.

History and Significance

The bridge was constructed during the Marcos era and was inaugurated in 1973. It was part of the “Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway” and is considered one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of its time. Its unique S-shaped design and scenic location make it a popular stop for travelers heading between Tacloban City and Samar.

How to Get There

  • From Tacloban City: Ride a jeep or van going to Basey or Marabut. Travel time is around 15–20 minutes.
  • From Catbalogan (Samar): Ride a van bound for Tacloban and ask the driver to drop you near the bridge.
  • Nearest Airport: Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (Tacloban)

Things to Do at San Juanico Bridge

  • Walk or bike across the bridge to enjoy the panoramic view of San Juanico Strait
  • Take photos during sunrise or sunset for dramatic lighting
  • Watch the San Juanico Bridge Light Show (check Tacloban tourism page for the schedule)
  • Capture drone shots if you’re a content creator (check local drone laws)
  • Enjoy fresh air and sea breeze while observing boats and marine life

Travel Tips

  • Visit during the **late afternoon** or **early morning** to avoid heat and get better lighting for photos
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan to walk the whole bridge
  • Be cautious when taking pictures — stay on the pedestrian lane for safety
  • Bring water and snacks — there are few vendors nearby
  • Watch out for sudden rain — bring a poncho or umbrella
