About Yangmingshan National Park
Yangmingshan National Park (陽明山國家公園) is one of Taiwan's nine national parks and the only one situated within a major metropolitan area. Spanning over 113 square kilometers across the Beitou and Shilin districts of Taipei and reaching into New Taipei City, this volcanic mountain sanctuary serves as the city’s green lungs. It offers a dramatic landscape of dormant volcanoes, steaming geothermal vents, rolling alpine grasslands, quiet bamboo forests, and therapeutic hot springs.

History and Volcanic Geology
Formed millions of years ago by the Tatun Volcano Group's eruptive activity, the region remains home to active geothermal features such as sulfur fumaroles, hot springs, and thermal vents. During the Qing Dynasty, the area was known as Caoshan (Grass Mountain) because sulfur collectors regularly burned the hillside grasses to prevent timber theft and facilitate mineral harvesting.
During the Japanese colonial period, the area was recognized for its rich hot spring resources and developed into Taiwan's first designated national park area, named Daiton National Park in 1937. Following World War II, the Republic of China government renamed the park Yangmingshan in 1950 in honor of the Ming Dynasty philosopher Wang Yangming. On September 16, 1985, it was formally established as Taiwan's third official national park, dedicated to preserving unique volcanic ecosystems and flora.
What to See

1. Xiaoyoukeng Recreation Area

2. Qingtiangang Grassland

3. Zhuzihu (Bamboo Lake)

4. Yangmingshan Flower Clock
Located near the main park entrance, this massive 22-foot flower clock is constructed entirely of colorful seasonal blooms and plays light music hourly. Surrounded by cherry trees and classical pavilions, it is one of the park’s most iconic photo spots.
5. Lengshuikeng & Milk Lake
Translated as "Cold Water Pit," Lengshuikeng features natural sulfur hot springs that are cooler than typical hot springs (around 40°C / 104°F). Nearby lies Milk Lake, a small volcanic lake whose waters turn a milky-white color due to precipitated sulfur sulfur minerals.

1. Hike to the Summit of Mount Qixing
Challenge yourself by hiking up Mount Qixing (Seven Star Mountain), the highest peak in Taipei at 1,120 meters. Starting from Xiaoyoukeng or Lengshuikeng, the trail takes you up stone staircases to 360-degree views of Taipei City and the Northern Coast.
2. Soak in Natural Hot Springs

How to Get There
Reaching Yangmingshan National Park from central Taipei is straightforward via public transit:
- By Taipei Metro (MRT) & Public Bus (Most Popular):
- Take the Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyi Line) to Jiantan Station (R15). Take Exit 1 and hop on Bus R5 (Red 5) or Bus 260 straight to the Yangmingshan Bus Terminal.
- Alternatively, take the Red Line to Beitou Station (R22) and board Bus S9 (Small 9) to go directly to Zhuzihu.
- By Shuttle Bus 108 inside the Park:
- Once at the main Yangmingshan Bus Terminal, transfer to the 108 Park Shuttle Bus, a hop-on-hop-off bus loop connecting all major sights (Xiaoyoukeng, Lengshuikeng, Qingtiangang, and Yangming Park).
- By Direct City Bus:
- Board Bus 260 directly from Taipei Main Station bus stop to the Yangmingshan Bus Terminal.
