About Tigbauan Church

The Tigbauan Church in Iloilo, also known as the St. John of Sahagun Parish Church, is one of the province’s most remarkable heritage sites. Built in the 16th century by the Spanish Augustinians, the church stands out for its unique Latin-American Churrigueresque architectural style and its beautifully crafted mosaics that depict biblical scenes. As a National Historical Landmark, it continues to be both a center of faith and a treasure of Iloilo’s colonial past.

It is believed that there had been no parish priest when Tigbauan Church was established, but it could be between 1575 and 1580 when F. Luis de Montoya was assigned as Prior. This church underwent a lot of repairs because of natural disasters like earthquakes. The repair was done by different people who served as church leaders. After Miag-ao and Guimbal, around 6 PM, we passed by this historical church. I had already paid my fare to Iloilo City, but I was amazed by the church's facade, so I immediately got off the jeepney and had a very short visit. In front is an open plaza just a few meters from the Tigbauan Municipal Hall.

Tigbauan Church is considered a classic example of a Spanish Churrigueresque style. They used local reddish coral stone and limestone quarried nearby to build the façade. The carvings were done by the selected and famous Chinese/Filipino artist of their time. I didn't enter this church because there was an ongoing mass.

A visit to the Tigbauan Church is more than just a stop at a religious site—it is a journey into Iloilo’s history, culture, and devotion. With its stunning architecture and spiritual significance, this centuries-old church remains a testament to the enduring legacy of faith in the region.
