Cagayan de Oro City Travel Guide: City of Golden Friendship

Cagayan de Oro City

About Cagayan de Oro City

Known as the City of Golden Friendship, Cagayan de Oro (or CDO) is a dynamic and welcoming city located in Northern Mindanao. It serves as the regional hub of Misamis Oriental and is one of the Philippines’ top adventure destinations, offering an exciting mix of urban life, nature, and cultural heritage.

CDO is most famous for its exhilarating whitewater rafting along the Cagayan de Oro River — an experience that attracts thrill-seekers from across the country. Beyond its adventure scene, the city is also known for its friendly locals, vibrant food culture, and easy access to nearby attractions like Camiguin Island, Bukidnon, and Iligan City.

Top Tourist Attractions in Cagayan de Oro

1. Whitewater Rafting

No trip to CDO is complete without trying its whitewater rafting. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned paddler, this activity guarantees an adrenaline rush as you navigate through thrilling rapids surrounded by stunning river landscapes. Several tour operators offer packages that include gear, guides, and transportation.

2. Seven Seas Waterpark & Resort

Located in nearby Opol, Seven Seas Waterpark is one of Mindanao’s largest and most popular water adventure parks. It features giant slides, wave pools, and pirate-themed attractions — perfect for families and groups.

3. High Ridge

For panoramic views of the city, High Ridge offers a great vantage point, especially at sunset. The place also has a restaurant where you can enjoy local dishes while admiring the city lights.

4. Gaston Park & St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral

Located in the city center, Gaston Park is a relaxing spot surrounded by historical landmarks. Right beside it stands the St. Augustine Cathedral, one of CDO’s oldest churches, originally built in the 1600s.

5. Mapawa Nature Park

Adventure lovers will enjoy Mapawa Nature Park, located just outside the city proper. The park features waterfalls, river trekking, zip lines, and forest trails — a paradise for eco-tourists and hikers.

6. Macahambus Cave and Gorge

A short drive from the city center, this historic cave played a role in the Battle of Macahambus in 1900. It also leads to a viewing deck overlooking a deep gorge and the Cagayan River.

How to Get There

By Air: Cagayan de Oro is served by Laguindingan Airport (CGY), located about 45 minutes from the city center. There are daily flights from Manila, Cebu, and Davao operated by major airlines like Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia.

By Sea: Regular ferries connect CDO to Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod via the Port of Cagayan de Oro in Macabalan.

By Land: Buses from Bukidnon, Iligan, and Davao also serve CDO daily. The city’s main terminal is Agora Bus Terminal.

My Actual Itinerary in CDO

This is Day 2 – 7 Days Solo-Backpacking in Mindanao

Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Lanao del Sur (BARMM)

So after Marawi City, I rode a van to Iligan, where I rode a Rural Transit Bus to CDO. Then, a jeep to LimketKai and alighted at Gaisano. Crossed the footbridge and headed to the GV Hotel. Had dinner at the mall, coffee break at Starbucks, headed back to GV, bathed, relaxed, and rested. The next day, early in the morning, after breakfast, using Google Maps, I had my walking tour to Plaza Divisoria, Gaston Park, and the City Museum. Like the other cities, the streets of CDO are busy, and it is better to walk than to ride in a tricycle or jeepney.

After the cathedral, walked back to the hotel. Tidied up. Settled everything. Rode a tricycle to Agora Terminal for my backpacking in Bukidnon.

Where to Eat in Cagayan de Oro

CDO’s food scene reflects its mix of modern city life and traditional Mindanao flavors. Try the local favorite sinuglaw (grilled pork and ceviche), pastel bread from Camiguin, and freshly brewed coffee at Kave Restaurant or Boy Zugba. Don’t miss the Night Café at Divisoria on weekends for street food and live music.
