The Saint Bartholomew Church, also known as the Catbalogan Cathedral, is one of the most important religious and historical landmarks in Catbalogan City, Samar. Dedicated to Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the city’s patron saint, this centuries-old Catholic church stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and community identity.

History
Saint Bartholomew Church traces its origins to the early Spanish colonial period when Jesuit missionaries first established Christian settlements in Samar. Through centuries of natural disasters, political changes, and wartime conflicts, the church continuously evolved—undergoing several renovations while preserving its original character.
The church became the seat of the Diocese of Calbayog before the diocese’s expansion. Today, it remains a major pilgrimage site, especially during the Feast of Saint Bartholomew every August 24, when Catbalogan celebrates one of its biggest annual religious events.
