Nestled in Barangay Tunga-Tunga in Maasin City, this majestic Baroque cathedral stands as the spiritual seat of the Diocese of Maasin. Elevated to a National Shrine in 2024, Maasin Cathedral is not only a primary place of worship for Leyte’s Catholic community but also an architectural anchor that showcases centuries of resilience, culture, and deep Marian devotion.
History
The history of Maasin Cathedral traces back to 1755 when Jesuit missionaries established the parish in one of Southern Leyte's oldest settlements. Early wooden structures faced frequent destructions from Moro raiders. When the Franciscans took over pastoral care in 1843, they dedicated the parish to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The church suffered significant fire damage in 1882, but dedicated Filipino secular priests, including Fr. Toribio Padilla and Fr. Felix Magno, immediately spearheaded its reconstruction using heavy stone masonry and solid timber pillars.
Over the decades, the cathedral underwent numerous enhancements while keeping its historical charm intact. In August 2022, the revered image of Our Lady of the Assumption received a Pontifical Canonical Coronation granted by Pope Francis. Recognizing its historical and spiritual significance to the entire nation, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) officially elevated the cathedral to a National Shrine on August 14, 2024.

How to Get There
Reaching Maasin Cathedral is straightforward regardless of your starting point in the Visayas region:
- From Tacloban Airport (TAC): Board a passenger van or bus bound for Maasin City at the Tacloban New Bus Terminal. The travel time is approximately 3 to 4 hours. Once at Maasin Bus Terminal, take a tricycle directly to the Cathedral in Brgy. Tunga-Tunga.
- From Ormoc City: Take a direct van or bus headed south to Maasin City (around 2 to 2.5 hours). Get off at the city proper near the Cathedral plaza.
- Via Sea Travel (Cebu to Maasin): Take an overnight passenger ferry or fast craft from Cebu City directly to Maasin City Port. From the port, the cathedral is just a 5-minute tricycle ride or a 15-minute walk away.
- Within Maasin City Proper: Simply hail any local motorcab (tricycle) and ask to be dropped off at "Katedral" or "Plaza del Pilar."
