About Taipei Zoo

History & Conservation Efforts
Originally established in 1914 during the period of Japanese rule as a small private zoological garden in Yuanshan (northern Taipei), the property was bought by the government the following year and converted into a public park. After World War II, ownership transitioned to the Taipei City Government.
By the 1970s, spatial constraints at the Yuanshan location made it difficult to provide proper animal welfare and modern educational facilities. In 1973, plans were launched to build a expansive, modern sanctuary in Muzha. The new Muzha facility officially opened its doors on New Year's Day in 1987, spanning 90 public-accessible hectares nestled against natural hillsides. Today, the zoo focuses on four core pillars: environmental education, wildlife research, species conservation, and eco-recreation. It works globally alongside NGOs and international breeding programs to protect endangered species like the Formosan pangolin, leopard cat, and Asian elephant.
