In Butuan City, Agusan del Norte | The Filipino word Baranggay came from the word: Balangay or Balanghai which is watercraft used by the ancient people in the Philippines for transportation and for barter and trade. If I am not mistaken, it was discussed when I was in the fifth grade, in HEKASI. I am happy that today, it’s time to see the actual relics of Balangay, discovered in Butuan. Since the guard did not allow me to use my DSLR or even my digital camera.
Known as the “Ancient City of the Philippines”, Butuan City is the historical and cultural heart of the Caraga Region in Northern Mindanao. This progressive city was once the center of trade and civilization long before Spanish colonization, as evidenced by the discovery of the Balangay Boats, which date back to as early as the 10th century.

The Balangay Shrine in Butuan City is a remarkable window into the Philippines’ ancient maritime heritage. This historical site houses the remains of the famed balangay or “Butuan boat,” the oldest wooden watercraft ever excavated in Southeast Asia. Visiting the Balangay Shrine feels like stepping back in time, offering a deeper appreciation for the early Filipinos’ craftsmanship, seafaring skills, and thriving trade long before the Spanish arrived.

Our original plan was to hike Mt. Dulang-dulang and Mt. Kitanglad, but because of the question: “gusto nyo ba?” it was changed to backpacking in Northern Mindanao. It happened for a very, very short time. So from Malaybalay, Bukidnon, we rode on a bus with a Cagayan signboard and alighted at Agora Terminal. At the terminal, we rode in a bus with a Butuan signboard and alighted at Butuan Terminal. Then, another bus ride to Mangahoy, Bislig, Surigao del Sur. Our first destinations are the majestic tourist spots in Surigao del Sur.
