🏔️ About the Bakun Trio
The Bakun Trio is one of the most iconic hiking challenges in Northern Luzon. Nestled in the scenic municipality of Bakun, Benguet, this legendary trio — Mt. Lubo, Mt. Tenglawan, and Mt. Kabunian — offers an unforgettable adventure that combines rugged mountain trails, rich culture, and breathtaking Cordillera landscapes. Completing all three peaks is a true test of endurance, rewarding climbers with panoramic views and a deep connection to the highlands of Benguet.
Traditionally, these climbs were done consecutively over 3 days, but some hardcore mountaineers complete the “trio” within 24 to 48 hours. Local guides and homestays in Bakun make the experience safe, organized, and culturally immersive.

🥾 Trail Information
Mt. Lobo
Standing at around 2,290 meters above sea level, Mt. Lobo is the highest among the three. The trail passes through rice terraces, pine forests, and ridges overlooking nearby towns. A sea of clouds often greets hikers at dawn, making it one of the most photogenic summits in Benguet.
Mt. Tenglawan
Known for its towering limestone cliffs and the “Carrot Rock” formation, Mt. Tenglawan is a favorite among photographers and thrill-seekers. The trail is long and steep but offers magnificent views of the Bakun valley below.
Mt. Kabunian
Considered sacred by locals, Mt. Kabunian is named after the Igorot deity “Kabunian.” The mountain features ancient burial sites and steep, open trails that lead to a massive cross overlooking the town. It’s often climbed last, serving as the spiritual finale of the Bakun Trio journey.
📅 Our Actual Itinerary (Bakun Trio)
We met at the Victory Liner Bus Terminal in Cubao and rode a bus bound for Baguio. From Baguio City, we chartered a jeep to Bakun, Benguet. Travel time was within 4-5 hours. But before reaching our destination, we passed by different landmarks of the North, one of which was the Highest Point (photo above). The entire travel period was an adjustment period for our group and other participants.
For the first time, I met Youi at a hiking event. White on the road, most of the time I was just staring on the gorgeous surroundings. I visited Benguet several times, for different reasons but I am still astounded by its beauty. The cool temperature, the relaxing green environment that surrounds us and the beautiful patterns of the farmlands from afar were such a gift.
To add breathtaking adventure, when it was already safe, four of us spent an hour on top of the jeepney. That time, I was even more amazed by the stunning landscape in the area. The shapes of the mountains, the flowers, the pine trees, and the cold breeze were mind-blowing.
Arrival at Mt. Lobo
Arrival at Dada Poblacion, Bakun, Benguet. Processed our papers, guides and started trekking. Our first destination was Mt. Lobo; others call it Lubo, the local name is Patullok, which means “pointed.” The trail is easy to moderate, passing by the residents' houses. The majority of the trails are well-established and open to the sun’s UV rays. Its terrain is composed of virgin forests, farmlands, and woodlands. Nevertheless, hiking Mt. Lobo was remarkable.
Mt. Tenglawan
Second Day | As early as 4 AM, we started preparing for a bigger adventure. Among the Bakun Trio mountains, Mt. Tenglawan is the most difficult to hike because of its long terrain and ascent, although its trail class and technicalities can be placed at a moderate level. Tenglawan has a fantastic shape from afar (photo above). Based on how it looks and its shapes, this giant can be compared to Mt. Guiting-guiding in Romblon. Hiking Tenglawan is definitely highly recommended.
Mt. Kabunian
Third Day | Due to physical circumstances (arte, tinatamad lang talaga), our group wasn’t able to trek Mt. Kabunian, meaning we only hiked Bakun Duo. The other participants started trekking as early as 4:30 AM, while we continued preparing our sumptuous breakfast. Then, we had time to walk in the village, discover their culture, and immerse ourselves in the locals.
Tekip Falls
Our Plan B | Instead of hiking Mt. Kabunian, we visited and had our late socials by the falls called Tekip Falls, one of the fantastic waterfalls in Bakun, Benguet. It’s a 75-80-foot waterfall situated on one of the hidden sides of the Bakun ranges. It’s a 30-45 minute walk from the old municipal hall, passing on the Pilapil. I enjoyed the relaxing ambiance by the Tekip Falls while having a few shots of brandy.
Dinner at Good Taste, Baguio
It took us seven hours from Bakun to Baguio City. Our trip to Manila was still at 11 PM, so we spent our remaining hours for dinner to rejuvenate our bodies from the toxic and challenging trip. Good Taste was a good choice. Had rice with buttered chicken, sinigang na hipon, and crispy pata.
