About the Aguinaldo Shrine
The Emilio Aguinaldo Mansion in Kawit, Cavite stands as a proud symbol of Philippine independence and national pride. This historic house, where the first Philippine flag was unfurled and the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898, preserves the spirit of freedom that shaped the nation. Its architecture, artifacts, and timeless charm offer visitors a glimpse into the life of General Emilio Aguinaldo and the country’s revolutionary past.
On this balcony, President Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine Independence in Kawit on June 12, 1898, because of successive Filipino victories in various battles. Ambrosio Rianzarez Bautista was instructed to write the Act of Proclamation of Independence. The Philippine National Hymn was composed by Maestro Julian Felipe, based on the Spanish national anthem. It was formally played during the proclamation of Philippine independence in Kawit on June 12, 1898.

Constructed sometime in the mid-19th century, this house evolved from a simple structure into a huge mansion in the 1920s. Emilio Aguinaldo donated the house to the government in 1963. Emilio was born on March 22, 1869, in Kawit and was named after St. Emilio, meaning holy. He was fondly called Miong and was the seventh of eight children of Carlos Aguinaldo and Trinidad Famy. His siblings were Primo, Benigno, Esteban, Tomasa, Crispulo, Ambrocio, and Felicidad.
