About
Paco Park is a serene, circular oasis tucked away in the district of Paco, Manila. Originally constructed during the Spanish colonial era as a municipal cemetery, this 4,100-square-meter historical site has evolved into a peaceful national park and beloved cultural heritage landmark.
Surrounded by thick, ancient stone walls lined with hollow niches, Paco Park combines solemn history with lush green landscaping. Managed by the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), it provides a quiet escape from Manila's urban bustle, featuring shaded walkways, a central domed chapel, and manicured lawns suitable for quiet reflection and photography.
History
Construction of the site began in the late 18th century under the direction of the Dominican Order, opening in 1822 as Cementerio General de Dilao to accommodate victims of a severe cholera outbreak and elite Spanish families living in Manila. Designed with two concentric circular stone walls, the inner wall enclosed the original burial niches, while the outer wall was added later to expand capacity.
Paco Park holds immense national importance in Philippine history. Following their execution at Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park) in 1872, the martyred priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora (GOMBURZA) were secretly interred in an unmarked grave within the cemetery wall. Years later, on December 30, 1896, the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was also secretly buried here under the initials "R.P.J." after his execution, remaining interred at Paco Park until his remains were exhumed and moved to Luneta in 1898.
Burials at the cemetery officially ceased in 1912, and many remains were relocated. During World War II, Japanese forces utilized the fortification as a defensive supply depot and ammunition storehouse. In 1966, the site was officially declared a National Park, transforming the old burial ground into a tranquil public recreation area.

A memorial marker paying tribute to Fathers Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora, honoring the spot where the three martyred priests were interred following their garrote execution in 1872.
4. Concentric Circular Stone Walls and Empty Niches
The thick adobe and brick outer and inner walls lined with empty burial niches, now covered in moss and climbing vines that showcase Spanish colonial masonry.
5. Upper Wall Promenade
Elevated stone pathways atop the perimeter walls that allow visitors to walk along the upper tier of the park for a vantage point over the manicured central gardens.

- Take LRT-1 and alight at United Nations (UN) Station.
- Walk east along Padre Faura Street toward San Marcelino Street or General Luna Street (around 10–15 minutes walking distance).
